Cycle Social Weekend Trip

WEEKEND CYCLE RIDE TO NORTHALLERTON

                                                               22ND & 23RD JULY 2017

                                                (Approximately 35 miles to Northallerton)

Meet 10.30am in the car park of the Dawnay Arms Shipton by Beningbrough.

No exact route has been decided yet but we won’t be going along the A19 or A168, we will stick to the back roads. I hope to check out a few country pubs between now and then, if anybody knows of any good pubs en-route please let me know.

A few options are: Black Horse, Tollerton; New Inn, Tholthorpe; Old Black Bull, Raskelf; Oak Tree Inn and The Golden Lion, Helperby and The Moor and Pheasant, Dalton. From Dalton we can pick up a cycle track into Thirsk. Thirsk has 2 good pubs worth checking out: The Three Tuns, which is a Weatherspoons, and Little 3, which has 3 or 4 rotating casks. Maybe check one out on the way there and one on the way back.

The Old Oak Tree at South Kilvington just outside Thirsk may also be worth a look. When we leave Thirsk we can again pick up the cycle track all the way to Northallerton maybe stopping at The Crosby in Thornton le Beans.

Northallerton itself has plenty of pubs on offer but there are 3 really worth checking out:

  1. The Stumble Inn – 6 pumps always on and also a good choice of cider.
  2. Little Tanner – a good choice of real ale and craft beer and often live music.
  3. Tithe Bar – 6 hand pumps always on.

Accommodation in Northallerton.

On my visit I checked out 3 places; all look fine.

The Black Bull 01609 771960

Golden Lion 01609 777411

The Windsor B&B 01609 774100

Rooms are approx. £65-£85 incl. breakfast depending on room type.

I’m sure other B&B’s are available. Please book your own accommodation.

The return journey.

Leave Northallerton after breakfast and head back to Thirsk for a coffee, or a beer and maybe lunch.

Possible route after Thirsk could be the other side of the A19.

Maybe: Coxwold – Fauconberg Arms; Crayke – The Durham Ox; Stillington – The White Bear, Huby – The Mended Drum, then head back towards York.

Please confirm via email if you are coming along richiebardo@yahoo.co.uk

Looking forward to a good weekend.

Richard Kettlestring.
